Playing the 122

Strengths

The 122 allows the team to effectively cover all areas of the pitch in the defensive phase if they remain compact and slide side to side. Threat also offered with 2 in attack.

Balance provided with 2 in attack and defence, when attacking down the sides, single defender can offer balanced support to set or combine with attacking player.

Weaknesses

Requires whole team to be focused to cover wide areas especially with younger players. If one goes to press, then teammate must go with to avoid leaving large gaps.

Consider how you can create overloads and identify the best way to add extra defender to join your 2 forward players, central or wide and what are your triggers to support.
